SHORT NOTE ON GEOGRAPHY

Total area of Jakarta Special Province is 650 square kms with the position from 106o22'42'' to 106o58'18'' East and from -5o19;12'' to -5o25'54'' South. The position of the land from the sea level is from 0 meter at Tanjung Priok Sea Port area to 50 meters above sea level, especially high place at south Jakarta. The more south the more higher the land altitude.The area of Jakarta city is located on the north west of west Java province on the bay protected on the east by the cape of Karawang and on the west by the area of east Teluk Naga which protrudes deep to the sea. The whole area of Jakarta is encircled by the area of Kabupaten Bekasi on the east, south and west sides. On the north is Java sea protected by about 60 small islands scattered at the straight line of North - South of Kabupaten Tanggerang. Most of the city area includes the northern shore are flat land with low level, and toward the southern area the land is elevating to higher level from sea level. The city is splitted by a river called Ciliwung which starts at highland of Bogor and Puncak, a place aroung 70 kms south of Jakarta city. The land condition of Jakarta is subject of yearly flooding, especially the lowland used as the housing by the poorer people along the river sides such as Ciliwung river. According to the report of research on Pulau Seribu, one is the Kecamatan district of Jakarta, the pollution of wastes such as plastic are threatening the aquatic life along Jakarta bay. The whole city is divided into 5 municipalities at the same level as Kabupaten, those North Jakarta municipality, east Jakarta municipality, south Jakarta municipality, central Jakarta, and west Jakarta municipality. For those 5 municipalities are administrated under the province of Jakarta and headed by a governor. Each municipality is divided into some smaller unit of administration called Kecamatan. Each Kecamatan is divided into more smaller unit of administration called Kelurahan which covers up to the smallest units of administration such as settlement units called RT and RW.

The land of Jakarta as part of tropical area of Indonesia has the same characteristic in temperature and season as other part of West Indonesia region. Temperature range daily between 30oC to 34oC, but in 2006 for the first time it is recorded the highest heat of 37oC.

The number of population of Jakarta in 2006 is 8.755.700 persons, which places Jakarta as one of the biggest city in Asia in terms of population number. If we see the development of population in Jakarta, it shows a great growth ratio, from around 534.823 in 1941, reached 1.432.085 after 10 years in 1950, 2.910.858 in 1960, 4.437.135 in 1970, 6.480.654 in 1980, 8.227.746 in 1990, and 8.385.639 in the year of 2000. Detail table of population number every year has been published by the government of Jakarta. The fast growth of population in Jakarta come from the urbanization where people from all part of Indonesia move to the city to look for better job. Not only skill people who have moved to the city but also unskilled people without any guarantee that they will be able to find suitable job. This urbanization has caused major problem to the environment such as unemployment, pollution and criminal. The government has issued a regulation for those who want to come to the city with at least the guarantee she/he has the suitable job according to his/her skill.

Read the name it might cause misleading to imagine that there are around a thousand islands or in Bahasa Indonesia is Pulau Seribu. Seribu means one thousand, but the actual islands are around 130. The name is just an expression of the great number of islands that dots Jakarta Bay starting around 15 to 100 kms north from specs of atols to a real inhabited islands or Pulau-pulau hidup.
